Seven great tips for Beginner yogis

If you are new to yoga, stepping into a studio and joining a class can feel intimidating. Here are seven top tips to help beginners start their practice on the right foot.

1. ACCEPT YOU ARE A BEGINNER

Starting yoga is like learning to play an instrument, drive a car or run a 10km race – it’s totally okay to be a beginner. Don’t get frustrated if your hips are still tight after a few classes or if postures are confusing after a month. Fine-tuning your body takes time, just like tuning an instrument.

2. GO SLOW

Be patient for the first few weeks of practice, and choose classes that are a little slower so you can get to grips with alignment and movements on the mat. Try to attend classes at least once a week, so the postures and cues become familiar to you.

3. BREATHE

It might seem odd, but it’s easy to forget to breathe. If you find a pose challenging, remind yourself to breathe! Even, relaxed breathing signals to your body and brain that everything is okay, reducing stress and enhancing well-being. But don’t worry, if you forget to breathe, the your yoga teacher will remind you!

4. RELEASE EXPECTATIONS

Yoga teaches us to release expectations. Focusing only on the outcome prevents us from being fully present in the moment. You can't control the result or achievement of your practice, so try to let go of the idea of being ‘good’ at yoga and just enjoy the process.

5. FORGET THE PICTURES, FOCUS ON YOU

Don’t get caught up in trying to achieve the complicated shapes or acrobatic moves you see on social media. Everyone is different and comes to yoga for different reasons. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to yoga. Your practice is about you, not the pictures or perceptions you’ve seen.

6. FOCUS ON YOUR FOUNDATION

Whether your hands or feet are supporting you in a posture, your body’s foundation is crucial. Like the foundation of a house, your entire structure relies on it. Pay attention to how your hands and feet are placed and listen to the small cues from your teacher.

7. GET A SUITABLE MAT

A practical tip: invest in a yoga mat that prevents your hands and feet from slipping. Avoid applying hand cream before class, and choose a mat that isn’t too thick or squishy. These small adjustments will help you feel more confident and focused during your practice.
